The PerioTrap® Technology

A new approach that blocks harmful bacteria and protects the microbiome.

P. gingivalis: The key bacterium of periodontitis

Porphyromonas gingivalis is a keystone pathogen in periodontitis. Although present only in small quantities, it influences the entire bacterial balance: it alters the behavior of other bacteria, enhances their pathogenic effects, and weakens the natural defense mechanisms. This results in a persistent inflammatory response that, in the long term, leads to tissue and bone loss – the typical consequences of periodontitis.

"When P. gingivalis appears, the biofilm becomes unbalanced – inflammation and tissue breakdown are the long-term consequences."

Pierre Tangermann

Biochemist and CEO at PerioTrap

How a healthy microbiome counteracts periodontitis

A stable, diverse oral microbiome is crucial for balancing the imbalance caused by P. gingivalis. Beneficial bacteria protect the gums, compete with harmful germs, and support a healthy immune response. However, many conventional measures—such as strongly disinfecting mouthwashes—attack all bacteria. This also reduces the beneficial microorganisms, which can further disrupt the balance and provide additional space for pathogenic germs.

"The microbiome functions like a defense team: if you remove all the players, the attackers have free rein."

Dr. Mirko Buchholz

Pharmacist and CSO at PerioTrap

Targeted against the pathogen, not against the microbiome

PerioTrap® technology does not kill bacteria indiscriminately, but rather specifically blocks the disease-causing mechanisms of P. gingivalis . This controls the central disruptive factor in periodontitis while preserving the beneficial oral flora. This precise approach protects the microbiome and supports the natural defense functions of the gums in the long term.

"PerioTrap® eliminates the nuisance without disrupting the natural balance. This precision has been precisely what was previously lacking in gum care."

How does PerioTrap® compare?

PerioTrap®

Disinfectant Mouthwashes

Antibiotics

Selective mechanism of action

Microbiome friendly

Suitable for daily use

Targets directly P. gingivalis

Long-term gum care

Scientifically proven: How does PerioTrap® perform

-25% biofilm mass

PerioTrap® reduces the amount of harmful biofilm – an important factor in gum inflammation.

-13% biofilm activity

The activity of the biofilm is measurably reduced – it becomes less aggressive towards teeth and gums.

-90% tissue invasion

P. gingivalis is much less able to attack the gums. This protects the cells from damage.

-95% inflammation markers

Inflammatory signals are significantly reduced – a key step for healthy gums.

PerioTrap® products for clinic & home

Two complementary solutions for modern, microbiome-friendly gum care:

The prophylaxis care gel is for targeted use in the dental practice, and the microbiome toothpaste is for daily support at home. Both utilize the selective PerioTrap® technology – developed to precisely address inflammatory risks and protect the oral flora.
