Foam, shine, care – what's really inside?

Toothpaste and tooth gel are part of our daily routine – but what exactly do they contain? From foam and shine to care: dental care products contain many different ingredients. Some are particularly important for your oral health, while others are more a matter of personal preference. In this article, you'll learn which ingredients are beneficial – and which ones are worth a closer look.

Schaum, Glanz, Pflege – was steckt wirklich drin?

What is that?

Toothpaste and tooth gel are part of your daily routine – but what exactly do they contain? From foam and shine to care: dental care products contain many different ingredients. Some are particularly important for your oral health, while others are more a matter of personal preference. In this article, you'll learn which ingredients are beneficial – and which ones are worth a closer look.

  • Cleaning agents (e.g., hydrated silica or chalk) gently remove deposits.
  • Foaming agents such as lauryl glucoside distribute the paste in the mouth and create the typical foam.
  • Humectants (e.g. glycerin) keep the paste supple and prevent it from drying out.
  • Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and protects against cavities.
  • Extras such as flavorings (e.g. mint oil) provide freshness; nourishing additives such as panthenol can soothe gums.

Why is this important?

The right ingredients determine whether your gums stay healthy and your tooth enamel becomes strong. Some toothpastes rely on aggressive foaming agents – they provide a short-term feeling of cleanliness – but can irritate the oral flora. Others – like the products from PerioTrap – take a deliberately gentle approach and are microbiome-friendly.

Science explained briefly

Studies show that fluoride – e.g., sodium fluoride at 1450 ppm – significantly reduces the risk of tooth decay. Panthenol has anti-inflammatory properties and promotes gum healing, which is particularly important after professional teeth cleaning.

Some modern formulations also contain the patented PerioTrap technology: It specifically blocks harmful bacteria such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and helps to keep the oral microbiome in balance.

What can you do?

  • Pay close attention to the ingredients – fluoride can be beneficial, but it's best to avoid aggressive sulfates.
  • Choose microbiome-friendly products – for example, toothpastes that gently clean and care for your teeth.
  • Don't be fooled by the foam: Less foam often means gentler, more tolerable formulations.
  • Simply spit out after cleaning – do not rinse immediately with water. This helps the active ingredients stay effective for longer.

In summary

  • Not all foam means clean teeth.
  • Fluoride strengthens – aggressive sulfates can irritate.
  • PerioTrap protects your microbiome in a targeted and gentle way.

Did you know?

A mountain of foam in the sink is not a sign of "super clean". Foaming agents such as lauryl glucoside primarily serve to distribute the paste – they usually have little to do with the actual cleaning performance.
