Why your gums reveal more about your blood sugar than you think

Periodontitis and diabetes are more closely linked than many realize. Both diseases can exacerbate each other – a vicious cycle for gums and metabolism. Here you'll learn how they are connected and what you can do to keep both risks under control.

What is that?

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammation of the gums caused by harmful bacteria and, if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. Diabetes mellitus, on the other hand, is a metabolic disorder in which blood sugar levels are persistently elevated. What many don't know: People with diabetes have up to three times the risk of developing periodontitis. At the same time, untreated periodontitis can further destabilize blood sugar levels.

Why is it important?

If you have diabetes, your body is less able to fight infections – your gums become inflamed more easily, and wounds heal more slowly. Conversely, periodontal bacteria release toxins that promote inflammation throughout the body. This can worsen insulin resistance and raise blood sugar levels. Studies even show links to cardiovascular disease and an increased risk of complications in diabetes.

Science explained briefly

Researchers have discovered that the bacterial strain Porphyromonas gingivalis (a major cause of periodontitis) produces pro-inflammatory substances. These not only put a strain on your gums but also affect your metabolism. People with well-treated periodontitis have measurably better HbA1c levels (long-term blood sugar). Targeted oral hygiene can therefore have a positive impact on your blood sugar.

What can you do?

  • Twice a year for a check-up and professional teeth cleaning.
  • Brush your teeth twice a day, use dental floss or interdental brushes.
  • Keep blood sugar stable, eat a balanced diet, and don't smoke.
  • Use Microbiome toothpaste with PerioTrap® technology to support oral flora and inhibit harmful bacteria.

In summary

  • Periodontitis worsens blood sugar levels
  • Diabetes promotes gum inflammation
  • PerioTrap products provide targeted protection for gums and the microbiome

Did you know?

People with periodontitis have up to an 11 times higher risk of suffering from diabetes complications – and vice versa.
