Periodontitis & Rheumatism – How your mouth puts a strain on your joints

Your mouth is more than just a place to eat and speak – it's a reflection of your overall health. Research shows that inflammation in the mouth, such as periodontitis, can have far-reaching effects on the body. Particularly interesting (and alarming): it can influence joint diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. In this article, you'll learn how gum inflammation is linked to rheumatic conditions – and what you can do to keep your teeth and joints healthy.

What exactly is periodontitis?

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammation of the tooth-supporting structures. It develops when bacteria accumulate in dental plaque and irritate the gums. If left untreated, the jawbone deteriorates, teeth loosen, and in the worst case, are lost. The main culprit is the bacterium Porphyromonas gingivalis, a so-called key pathogen that drives inflammation and alters the biofilm (the bacterial film on the teeth).

Why does this affect your joints?

It sounds crazy, but it's scientifically proven: Periodontitis can intensify inflammation throughout the body. P. gingivalis produces enzymes (gingipains) that fuel immune responses. These pro-inflammatory substances travel through the bloodstream to other parts of the body – including the joints. Studies show that people with rheumatoid arthritis are more likely to have periodontitis, and untreated gum inflammation can even worsen rheumatoid arthritis symptoms.

Science explained briefly

Researchers discovered that P. gingivalis uses an enzyme that alters certain proteins in the body. This can "confuse" the immune system, causing the body to suddenly attack its own tissue (autoimmune reaction). The result: joint pain, swelling, and flare-ups of rheumatoid arthritis. PerioTrap® technology addresses this issue: it specifically blocks the virulence mechanisms (disease-causing properties) of P. gingivalis without interfering with its beneficial properties or other bacteria in the mouth.

What can you do?

  • Brush your teeth regularly! Twice a day, ideally with a toothpaste that is gentle on the microbiome.
  • Clean the spaces between your teeth. Flossing or using interdental brushes is essential.
  • Regular dental checkups: at least twice a year, even more often if you have rheumatism.
  • Supporting the microbiome: Products like PerioTrap microbiome toothpaste help to keep "bad" bacteria in check and promote a healthy oral flora.

In summary

  • Periodontitis can worsen rheumatic inflammation.
  • P. gingivalis massively disrupts the immune system
  • Gentle microbiome care protects teeth and joints.

Did you know?

Rheumatism patients have up to twice the risk of tooth loss if periodontitis remains untreated.
